Yangon
Yangon, the Capital of Myanmar, with over
five million inhabitants, is a main gateway to travel by Air or
by Sea for the
tourists. King Alaung Paya, Conqueror of the
Third Myanmar Empire gave the name of the city from Dagon to
Yangon which means “end of strife” after he conquered lower
Myanmar in 1755. It is also known as the Garden city of the East
with full of trees and shades, parks and lakes. Yangon is famous
for having Shwedagon Pagoda-one of the world famous golden Stupa
and lots of other interesting temples, Buddha images, Parks and
Colonial style buildings in the city centre left over from
British Time.
Sule Pagoda, Kaba Aye - world peace pagoda, National Museum,
Bogyoke Market (Scott market) are the highlights to visit in
Yangon.
Bago is situated about 80 km north east of
Yangon. Bago was founded in 573 A.D. by two Mon Princes from
T hahton. It was the Capital of Mon Kingdom in 15th century. Bago
was an important sea port for the Mon in early years until later
the river changed its course and cut off the city from the sea.
On the way to Bago, visit Htaukkyant War Cemetery with graves of
27000 Allied soldiers who died in Myanmar and Assam campaign of
WW II. Shwe Tha Hlaung Pagoda (55 m long Reclining Buddha
image), Shwemawdaw Pagoda, “Kanbawzathdi” Palace of the famous
King Bayintnaung, 28 m high huge Buddha of Kyaik Pun Pagoda are
some of the places of interest. |
